What is second-order thinking?
Second-order thinking is the habit of looking past the immediate result of a decision to the consequences of those consequences. First-order thinking asks "what happens next?" Second-order thinking asks "and then what?" — repeatedly.
Most poor decisions fail not at the first step, where the effects are obvious, but at the second and third steps, where reactions, incentives, and side effects compound. Thinking one layer deeper is a learnable skill, not a talent.
How to practice it
Ask 'and then what?'
For any decision or event, don't stop at the immediate effect. Ask what that effect causes next, and what those consequences cause in turn.
Separate orders of consequence
First-order effects are direct and immediate. Second-order effects are the reactions to those effects — often slower, less obvious, and more important.
Consider more than one path
The future is uncertain. Explore optimistic, balanced, and pessimistic chains instead of committing to a single narrative.
